John Greenleaf Whittier
Author Code: AJGW
| |
|
Born: Dec. 17, 1807 - Haverhill, Massachusetts, USA Died: Sep. 7, 1892 - Hampton Falls, New Hampshire
|
From a Quaker background, Whittier was educated at a local school and Haverhill Academy, although he received much of his literary interest and knowledge from his family. Starting a career in journalism, Whittier rose to editor of the New England Weekly Review in 1830. His first volume of tales, Legends of New England, was published in 1831. Whittier became a fervent abolitionist, publishing such poems as Moral Warfare and Massachusetts to Virginia, and supporting anti-slavery political candidates such as Lincoln. His other major works include Lays of My Home (1843), Songs of Labor (1850), Maud Muller (1854), The Barefoot Boy (1855), Barbara Flietchie (1863), Snow-Bound (1866), The Tent on the Beach (1867), Among the Hills (1868) and the Pennsylvania Pilgrim (1872). His only novel, Leaves From Margaret Smith's Journal, was published in 1849. |
