As a young man, Stendhal (the pseudonym of Beyle) served in Napoleon's army including the Russian campaign. After the Restoration, he spent much of the remiainder of his life in Italy, although he died in Paris while on a trip. Stendhal has become one of the giants of French literature and many place him alongside Balzac as the greatest of novelists. His best work can be seen in Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black - concerning France during the Restoration period) (1830) and La Chartreuse de Parme (The Charterhouse of Parma) (1839). Stendhal's other works include Vie de Rossini (1823), Racine et Shakespeare (1823 & 1825), L'Abbesse de Castro (1839) and the journal he kept from 1801 to 1818. He also wrote much journalism, travel sketches and criticism. |
