Said to have been a pupil of Callimachus, Apollonius first recited the Argonautica (the epic of Jason and the Golden Fleece) in Alexandria, but it is said that it was a failure. He then moved to Rhodes where it was well received. Apollonius held the post of librarian at Alexandria from c. 260 until 247 when he returned to Rhodes. Apart from the Argonautica, only a few minor poetical works of Apollonius are extant.
