Very little is known of the early life of Confcius, other than he was orphaned and largely self-educated. Confucius gathered a small group of disciples around him and began the teaching of moral and social ethics. Although not a religious leader, his teachings were to lay the foundation of a pseudo-religious movement that would influence China and most of eastern Asia for over 2000 years. Some of the later writings that are traditionally attributed to Confucius, such as The Analects, were probably written by one of his followers.
