Oliphant married her cousin Francis Wilson Oliphant in 1852 and moved to London where, in 1859, he passed away leaving Margaret with children and obligations, but little in the way of financial security. Although she had published Passages in the Life of Mrs. Margaret Maitland (1849) and Merkland (1851), it was now necessary for her to write to support her family. Up to the timeof her death in 1897, she was to publish more than 100 books. Her works included novels, biographies, historical studies and children's literature. Among her best known works are Salem Chapel (1863), Chronicles of Carlingford (1863-66), Miss Marjoribanks (1866), A Bealguered City (1880), A Little Pilgrim in the Unseen (1882) and Annals of a Publishing House: William Blackwood and His Sons (1897). |
