Very little is known of the life of Diogenes Laertius other than he flourished during the 3rd century AD and is credited with a history of Greek philosophy based on a compilation of biographical and bibliographical information. The oldest extant manuscript of his work dates from the 12th century. His work has received different titles over the years, but the most appropriate is probably History of Philosophy, or On the Lives, Opinions and Apophthegms of Famous Philosophers. Much of our current knowledge of these philosophers isderived from this work. Of further importance is the inclusion of the last will of Aristotle.
