Educated at Pembroke College and Balliol College, Oxford, Toynbee, who is often confused with his historian nephew, Arnold Joseph Toynbee, was a social reformer who spent much of his life devoted to public service and the welfare of the poor in the Whitechapel area of London. He taught economic history at Balliol College, Oxford and is also noted for having been one of the first to use the phrase "industrial revolution". |
