The grandson of president John Quincy Adams and son of politician Charles Francis Adams, Brooks was financially secure and, after 11 years in law, turned his talents to writing; primarily history and economics. As a proponent of the cyclical interpretation of history, he developed his theories in books such as The Law of Civilization and Decay (1895) and America's Economic Supremacy (1900). His other works include The Emancipation of Massachusetts (1887), The Gold Standard - An Historical Study (1895), The New Empire (1902) and Theory of Social Revolution (1913). |
