Son of the German novelist and essayist, Johanna Schopenhauer, Arthur was educated at the University of Gottingen and received his PhD at Jena in 1813. His thesis was later published in 1819 as The World As Will and Idea. He lectured at the University of Berlin at the same time as Georg Hegel. His metaphysical doctrine of the will was influential in later existentialist philosophy and Freudian psychology. His other works included On The Will In Nature (1836) and Parerga and Paralipomena (1851).
