Richard Burton

a.k.a. Sir Richard Francis Burton

Author Code: ERBX

Born: Mar. 19, 1821 - Torquay, Devon, England

Died: Oct. 20, 1890 - Trieste, Italy

Burton was expelled from Oxford in 1842, joined the Indian Army and spent eight years in India. He travelled to Mecca, disguised as a Muslim, in 1853 and was the first European to enter the forbidden city of Harrar in East Africa and led two unsuccessful expeditions to locate the source of the Nile (1855 and 1857-58). In all, Burton wrote over 43 volumes on explorations, anthropology and other subjects, and roughly 30 volumes of translations, of which the best known are the Arabian Nights (1885-88) and the Kama Sutra (1883).
