Nielsen was educated at the Copenhagen Conservatory of Music. For a time after leaving school he was an orchestra violinist, but soon focused his talents on composition. By the 1890's, Nielsen had developed his own unique style and produced numerous choral works including the Hymnus Amoris - Op. 12 and The Sleep - Op. 18. A fervent nationalist, Nielsen's music reflects the atmosphere and traditions of Denmark. From 1908 to 1914 he was the conductor of the Danish Royal Opera. In 1915, he was appointed a director of the Royal Conservatory, a post he held until 1927. His First Symphony - Op. 7, was produced in 1892. In all, Nielsen composed six symphonies and numerous works for piano, orchestral, choral pieces and songs, as well as two operas. |
