Author Code: ASTX
| |
Born: Aug. 8, 1884 - St. Louis, Missouri, USA Died: Jan. 29, 1933 - New York City, New York, USA
Educated at Mary Institute and Hosmer Hall in St. Louis, Teasdale travelled to Europe in 1905; the first of many such trips. In 1907, she published her first series of poems, Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems. The poet Vachel Lindsay proposed to Teasdale in 1913, but instead she married the businessman Ernst Filsinger, the following year. Nevertheless, Lindsay and Teasdale remained life-long friends. In 1915, she moved to New York, which would become her home for the rest of her life. In 1917, she published Love Songs, which won the 1918 Columbia University Poetry Society prize (the forerunner of the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry). After many years in an unhappy marriage, she divorced in 1929. Her health, which had always been a cause for concern, deteriorated and in 1933 she took an overdose of sleeping pills and died in her bath. That same year, what is undoubtedly her best work, Strange Victory, was published posthumously to much critical acclaim. Her other works include Helen of Troy and Other Poems (1911), Rivers to the Sea (1915), Flame and Shadow (1920) and Dark of the Moon (1926). |
