A child prodigy on the violin, Godard studied composition in Paris and, while still a youth, composed piano music, concerti and symphonies. In 1881, he produced his best-known opera, Jocelyn. Godard's other famous works include the opera Pedro de Zalamea (1884), La vivandiere (1895), and his symphony Symphoni Legendaire (1886). Godard's work has been compared in its style to Schumann and Chopin. |
