Married in 1655 to Francois Matier, comte de la Lafayette, she lived on her husband's estates until she returned to Paris in 1659 to pursue a career in literature and to care for her two sons. Her first novel, La Princesse de Montpensier, was published in 1662. In 1670, she published Zayde using the pseudonym of J. Regnault de Segrai. Her masterpiece, La Princess de Cleves, was published in 1678 and was a great success. An historical novel set in the 16th century, the book became a model for later psychological novels. Her last novel, La Comtesse de Tende, was published posthumously in 1724. |
