Ohnet originally studied law, but soon turned his interests to journalism and literature. In 1870, he became an editor of Le Pays and subsequently Le Constitutionnel. His first novel, Serge Panine became an immediate success when it was published in 1881 and went through one hundred and fifty French editions. Prior to this he had produced some stage dramas such as Regina Sarpi (1875) and Marthe (1877) which had also been well-received by the public. Ohnet became one of the best-selling French authors of the late 19th century. His other works include Le Maitre des Forges (1882), La Comtesse Sarah (1882), Lise Fleuyon (1884), Les Dames de Croix-Mort (1886), Volonte (1888), Le Docteur Rameau (1889), Le Droit de lEnfant (1894), La Dame en Gris (1895), Le Roi de Paris (1898), Gens de la Noce (1900) and Le Marche a lAmour (1902). |
