The son of a priest, Blicher received his basic education at a local school and from his father. As a young man he attended Copenhagen University, studying theology for which he received his degree in 1809. He returned to Jutland and the life of a country parson with plenty of time to travel the area walking, hunting and conversing with all elements of society. His novels and short stories often portray the people of Jutland with humour and realism. Probably his best-known work is En Landsbydegns Dagbog (1824) - The Diary of a Parish Clerk. Blicher also produced a great deal of poetry and translated many works into Danish, including Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield. His best-known collection of poems is Traekfuglene (1838) - Birds of Passage.
