The daughter of a merchant, Caballero was educated in Hamburg and moved to Spain in 1815. Over the next 20 years, she married three times. On the death of her third husband in 1859, Caballero devoted her energies to literature. Although she had published a romance in German, Sola in 1840, it was her novel, La Gaviota (The Seagull), which established her. Both critically acclaimed and widely popular, was one of the most successful Spanish literary works of the 19th century. Caballero's other works include La Familia de Alvareda, Lady Virginia, Una en Otra and Obras completos. |
