Amicis was educated at the grammar school at Turin and the Military Academy of Modena, entering the military after graduation. He took part in the battle of Custozza in 1866 and, in 1868, published Military Life in Italy: Sketches, based on his own experiences in the army. The book was an instant success and Amicis turned to literature as his new profession. He traveled widely and published a number of travel books including Spain (1873), Holland (1874), Morocco and Constantinople. In 1886, he published his greatest success, Cuore: Heart of a Boy. He also produced numerous short stories, some poetry and children's stories. |
