At the age of nine, Cather went with her family to Nebraska, from her home in Virginia. She went to the University of Nebraska, but moved back east to Pittsburgh where she stayed for 10 years During that stay she began to publish a number of short stories and poems. Landing a job as an editor of McClure's Magazine, she moved to New York where she remained for the rest of her life. After leaving the magazine in 1911, her first novel, Alexander's Bridge, was published in 1912. This was followed by the production of numerous volumes of short stories, poetry and further novels which included O Pioneers! in 1913 and Death Comes For The Archbishop in 1927. Cather was operated on in 1942 and never fully recovered from the surgery, publishing very little in her remaining years. |
