Educated at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, Chambers went on to study art at the Art Student's League. In 1886, he went to Paris to continue his studies, first at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and later at the Julien Academy. He gave his first exhibition in Paris in 1889. In 1893, he returned to America and began selling his illustrations to popular magazines such as Life and Vogue. In 1894, he published his first book, In The Quarter, which was reasonably successful and gave Chambers the confidence to continue writing. In 1895, he published The King In Yellow, a collection of horror short stories; a masterpiece of the supernatural and one which firmly established Chambers. He then turned to historical novels and romantic adventures. Chambers became one of the most popular novelists of the early 20th century. His main works include The Red Republic (1894), The Maker of Moons (1896), Lorraine (1896), The Mystery of Choice (1897), Ashes of Empire (1897), Cardigan (1901), The Maids of Paradise (1903), In Search of the Unknown (1904), The Fighting Chance (1906), The Tracer of Lost Persons (1906), The Streets of Ascalon (1912), The Hidden Children (1914), The Crimson Tide (1919), The Slayer of Souls (1920), The Little Red Foot (1921), The Drums of Aulone (1927), Beating Wings (1930) and War Paint and Rouge (1931). |
