Educated at Bologna, Florence, Padova and Rome, Della Casa was named archbishop of Benevento in 1544. He was subsequently sent to Venice as papal nuncio and in 1555 became secretary of state under Pope Paul IV. Della Casa wrote Il Galeteo, the title of which was derived from the friend that had inspired him to write it, in 1558. The book deals with etiquette and is both witty and informative. Unlike his predecessor Catiglione's work which was aimed more at the etiquette of court, Della Casa's work deals with everyday life in polite society. He also published Political Discourses and Rime Bernesche a book of satirical verse in addition to a number of translations. |
