Born into the landowning class, Garshin enlisted as a volunteer in the Russo-Turkish war and was wounded in action. During his recuperation, his first story, Four Days, was published in 1877 and depicts the sufferings of a wounded soldier. The story won him fame and he quickly became a popular writer in Russia. His masterpiece, The Scarlet Blossom, appeared in 1883. Garshin's genre remained the short story throughout his short but successful writing career. Suffering from a mental disorder, Garshin committed suicide in 1888 by jumping down a stairwell. Some of his better stories include Coward (1879), Artists (1879) and Signal (1887). |
