Adams was raised on an Indiana farm and, as such, was very familiar with cattle and horses. He travelled as a youth to Arkansas where he worked at a lumbermill for a year before moving on to Texas where he spent the next ten years traildriving. Over the next few years, Adams was involved in a number of dubious ventures, including gold-mining. In 1903, he published his first book, The Log of a Cowboy, considered by many to be his best work and one which accurately depicts the "true" cowboy of the West better than any other work. Adams settled in Colorado Springs and, apart from some time spent in Nevada and Kentucky, remained there until his death. His other works include A Texas Matchmaker (1904), The Outlet (1905), Cattle Brands (1906), Reed Anthony, Cowman (1907), Wells Brothers (1911) and The Ranch on the Beaver (1927). |
