Educated at Mannamead School in Plymouth, Phillpotts moved to London and took a position as a clerk with the Sun Insurance Company. He worked there for ten years and spent much of his free time in developing his writing skills. His first novel, Children of the Mist (1898), was a huge success and started his prolific writing career that would encompass over 250 books, plays and collections of poetry. Phillpotts settled in Dartmoor and went on to write over 18 novels and many short stories and poems about Dartmoor and the surrounding area. He was a close friend and neighbour of Agatha Christie and encouraged her writing during her early years. He was also a President of the Dartmoor Preservation Association for a number of years. Among his numerous works were Folly and Fresh Air (1892), Human Boy (1900), Fancy Free (1901), American Prisoner (1903), Haven (1909), Widecombe Fair (1913), As The Wind Blows (1920), The Grey Room (1921), Devonshire Cream (1925), Bred in the Bone (1932), Sonnets From Nature (1935), White Camel (1938), Ghostwater (1941) and Quartet (1946). |
