One of the most popular authors of the end of the 19th century. He was graduated from Harvard in 1852 and spent a number of years as a teacher and contributor to magazines. He returned to Harvard and took a Divinity degree in 1860, whereafter he spent some time in Europe before returning to the US at the outbreak of the Civil War. Due to his asthma, Alger was rejected for military service and returned to his passion for writing. His first novel, Frank's Campaign (1864), was a great success. Relocating to New York, Alger published Ragged Dick; or, Street Life in New York as a serial in 1867 and subsequently in book form that led to his sensational success as a writer "for boys". Alger became associated with the Newsboys' Lodging House in New York and wrote the many "rags to riches" stories that continued to build on his success. |
