Author Code: AEUF
| |
Born: Sep. 2, 1850 - St. Louis, Missouri, USA Died: Nov. 4, 1895 - Chicago, Illinois, USA
Educated at William's College, Massachusetts, Knox College and the University of Missouri, Field had written his first poem when he was only nine. During college, Field was a co-founder and literary editor of The Missourian, the campus newspaper. He joined the staff of the St. Louis Journal in 1873 and the following year he married Julia Comstock. He worked as a journalist for a number of Midwestern newspapers before joining the Chicago Daily News as a columnist in 1883. For the next twelve years, Field's column, "Sharps and Flats" was one of the most popular among readers. Today he is best remembered for his children's verse, especially the poem Dutch Lullaby with the characters Wynken, Blynken and Nod. In 1889, he published A Little Book of Western Verse which sold very well. His other works included Christian Treasures (1879), Culture's Garland (1887), Little Book of Profitable Tales (1889), With Trumpet and Drum (1892), Holy Cross and Other Tales (1893), Love Songs of Childhood (1894), Little Willie (1895) and Love Affairs of a Bibliomaniac (1896 Posthumous). |
