The son of the novelist and historian, Justin McCarthy, he became a member of parliament for Athlone in 1884 and held the seat until 1892. Fllowing in his father's footsteps, McCarthy devoted his time to writing. In 1901, he published If I Were King, based on the life of Francois Villon, and it is this work for which he is remembered today. Highly successful, If I Were King appeared on Broadway and was the basis for the operetta, The Vagabond King. McCarthy's other works include Madame Rejane (1895), The Proud Prince (1903), The Dryad (1905), The Flower of France (1906), The Illustrious O'Hagan (1906), The Gorgeous Borgia (1908), The Duke's Motto (1908), The God of Love (1909) and A Health Unto His Majesty (1912).
