Ella Wheeler Wilcox
a.k.a. Ella (nee) Wheeler
Author Code: AEWW
| |
|
Born: Nov. 5, 1850 - Johnstown Center, Wisconsin, USA Died: Oct. 30, 1919 - Branford, Connecticut, USA
|
Wilcox wrote her first poem when she was eight and was published in the New York Mercury when she was only 14. She attended Madison University, but left after a short time in order to concentrate on her writing. Her popularity rose during the decade of 1865 to 1875 when Wisconsin was swept by prohibition fever. Wilcox's anti-drinking poems were collected in the volume Drops of Water and sold well. In 1884, she married Robert Wilcox. Often rejected by critics, by the 1880's she was an established name in American poetry and much praised by her public. After her husband's death in 1916, Wilcox turned to spiritualism and eventually became a Rosicrucian. She died of breast cancer at her home in Branford. Her many works include Shells (1873), Poems of Passion (1883), The Adventures of Miss Volney (1888), Was It Suicide? (1892), An Ambitious Man (1896), Poems of Power (1901), Poems of Love (1905), Poems of Peace (1906), Diary of a Faithless Husband (1910), The Englishman and Other Poems (1912), Poems of Optimism (1915) and The World and I (1918). |
