British author of many detective novels, usually with a sporting theme. His first novel, A Virtue of Necessity, Appeared in 1899. He also wrote a number of short stories and some humorous verse. He created the characters Jimmie Haswell, a London lawyer, and Roger Bennion, golfer and amateur detective, who appeared in many of his over 50 novels. His works include The Secret of Bogey House (1924), The Sloane Square Mystery (1925), The Queen's Gate Mystery (1927), Rogues Fall Out (1928), Oddways (1930), The Woman in Black (1933), The Body in the Bunker (1935), Death Off the Fairway (1936), The Chief Witness (1940), The Scarlet Feather (1943), One to Play (1949), Exit the Skeleton (1952) and The Judas Kiss (1955 Posthumous). |
