White began writing as a young girl and contributed poems and essays to children's papers. In 1919, she moved to London where she wrote short stories for a number of years before publishing her first novel, The Wish-Bone, in 1927. In 1931, she embarked on her career of crime fiction with the publication of Put Out the Light, which was very popular. In 1933, she published Some Must Watch, which was subsequently filmed in 1946 as The Spiral Staircase. During the late 1930's and early 1940's, White was one of the most widely read crime writers. Her other works include 'Twill Soon Be Dark (1929), The Eternal Journey (1930), Fear Stalks the Village (1932), Wax (1935), The Wheel Spins (1936) - also filmed as The Lady Vanishes in 1938, Step in the Dark (1938), While She Sleeps (1940), Midnight House (1942) and They See in Darkness (1944). |
