Educated at the Meiningen Gymnasium, Baumbach, the son of a local medical practioner, studied natural science and attended a number of universities. He became a private tutor and worked in various cities including Graz, Bruun and Trieste. He wrote many songs and lyrics during the 1870's including one of the more popular editions, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (1878). His success in this area led him into a literary career. He returned to Meiningen in 1885, and took a position as ducal librarian, a post he held until his death. Baumbach was an excellent lyricist, but also excelled in narrative verse. His main works include Frau Holde (1881), Summer Legends (1881), Spielmannslieder (1882), Von der Landstrasse (1882) and Thuringer Lieder (1891). |
