Pinero studied law and spent some time in his fatyher's law practice until, in 1874, he joined R.H. Wyndham's theatrical company in Edinburgh. After also acting with the Lyceum Theatre company in London, he decided that acting was perhaps not his calling and turned to writing stage plays. His first play, £200 a Year, was produced at the Globe in 1877. His next play, Daisy's Escape (1878), was a success and confirmed Pinero's decision. The Squire (1881), was the first of his plays to achieve a positive critical response, but it wasn't until his many farces appeared that his success was firmly established. In 1893, his play The Second Mrs. Tanqueray was acclaimed as the finest English play of the time. Pinero was knighted in 1909. His other works include The Magistrate (1885), Sweet Lavender (1888), The Profligate (1889), Trelawny of the 'Wells' (1893), The Notorious Mrs Ebbsmith (1895), Mid-Channel (1909) and The Enchanted Cottage (1923). |
