Kline became a popular pulp author during the 1920's and is especially remembered for his novelistic feud with Edgar Rice Burroughs. Kline's Venus series prompted Burroughs to write his own Venus novels, which in turn led to Kline bringing out his Mars series. In 1923, he published his first short story, The Thing of a Thousand Shapes, in Weird Tales magazine, where he was on the editorial staff. Many of his later works were serialized in Weird Tales. His output dropped in the mid-1930's while he concentrated on being a literary agent, most notably for Robert E. Howard, creator of Conan the Barbarian. Kline's best-known works include Planet of Peril (1930), The Prince of Peril (1930), Maza of the Moon (1930), The Port of Peril (1932), The Swordsman of Mars (1933), Outlaws of Mars (1933) and Stolen Centuries (1939). |
