Educated at Yale University and the University of Berlin, Kent became an instructor at the University of Chicago from 1893 to 1895. He then became Professor of Biblical Literature and History at Brown University. In 1897, he published his first book, A History of the Hebrew People. In 1901, he was named Woolsey Professor of Biblical literature at Yale University and had become recognized internationally as an expert in his field.
