Educated at the University of Pittsburgh and in music with B.J. Lang and Stephen Emery in Boston, Nevin traveled to Berlin in 1884 and spent two years studying piano and theory with Karl Klindworth and Otto Tiersch. In 1886, he made his professional debut as a pianist in the US to critical acclaim. Most of Nevin's compositions are for the piano or vocal, his most memorable being Water Scenes, Op. 13 (1891), which contains the very familiar piece, Narcissus. From 1893 he toured Europe, teaching and performing, but returned home in 1897 due to ill health. In 1898, he published his song, The Rosary which was a phenomenal success, selling over a quarter of a million copies. |
