Nicholas P. Cushner was born in New York City and received his Ph.D. in history from University College, the University of London, in 1968. He began teaching Western Civilization at Canisius College, Buffalo, NewYork, in 1972 and has been with the State University of New York (Empire State College) since 1975 where he continued teaching Western Civ related subjects. In 1983 he received the Empire State College Foundation Award for Outstanding Scholarship, and in 1992 was named University Lecturer by the SUNY Chancellor. He has written six books on Latin America and his articles have been translated into Spanish and published in Mexico. His research has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Philosophical Society, the Mellon Foundation, the Fulbright Commission, and the Research Foundation of the State University of New York. He has written over 50 articles, encyclopedia articles, and reviews which have appeared in the American Historical Review, the Hispanic American Historical Review, Indice Histórico Español, and the Times Literary Supplement (London). Recently, he contributed extensively to the Encyclopedia of Latin American History and Culture, Scribner’s, 1996, and his Why Have You Come Here? Jesuits and the First Evangelization of Native America was published in August 2006 by the Oxford University Press. The Man Who Loved Women Too Much and Other Stories from the Inquisition, his collaboration with Marvin Lunenfeld, appeared in eBook form in 2007 and has now been followed by his exciting historical novel, Conquerors.
