One of Italy's earliest writers of the modern short story, Castelnuovo was also a participant in the Italian unification movement. His works were very popular in Italy at the end of the nineteenth century. Castelnuovo's son Guido became a famous Italian mathematician. His works include Aunt's Notebook (1872), Lauretta (1884), Alla Finistra (1885), Nella Lotta (1893), Onorevoli Paolo Leonforte (1894), Prima de Partire (1896), Troppo Amata (1913), Moncalvo (1913) and Professore Romualdo (1914).
