Lord Dunsany *

The son of the 17th Baron of Dunsany, John William Plunkett, Edward was educated at Eton College and the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. He served in the Boer War and inherited the title on his father's death in 1899. In 1904, he married Lady Beatrice Child Villierswho was his staunchest supporter during his literary career. Although he had published some poetry during the 1890s, his first real success was with The Gods of Pegana, in 1905. During the First World War, Dunsany served as a Captain of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and was wounded in the Easter Uprising in Dublin in 1916. He was a prolific writer and produced numerous plays, novels,poetry and many short stories. In 1919, he made the first of manu successful literary tours of America. His fantasy stories were highly praised internationally. His first novel, Don Rodriguez: Chronicles of the Shadow Valley appeared in 1922. He followed in 1924 with what many consider to be his best work, The King of Elfland's Daughter. Over the years, Dunsany's writing style shifted many times, but was always praised. His plays were performed on Broadway, the West End and many international theatres. He also produced many radio dramas. During the Second World War, he served in the Irish Army Reserve and the British Home Guard. He spent some time as the Byron Professor of English at Athens University in Greece, but had to cut his time short due to the German invasion. He died from appendicitis after becoming ill while eating dinner at the Earl of Fingall's home. Dunsany was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, the Royal Geographical Society, a member of the Irish Academy of Letters, and received an honorary doctorate from Trinity College, Dublin. His works include Time and the Gods (1906), The Book of Wonder (1912), A Night at an Inn (1916), A Dreamer's Tale and Other Stories (1917), The Blessing of Pan (1927), The Curse of the Wise Woman (1933), Jorkens Has a Large Whiskey (1940), Guerilla (1944), The Year (1946), To Awaken Pegasus (1949), The Last Revolution (1951) and His Fellow Men (1952).
