Died: Mar. 30, 1947 - Amersham, Buckinghamshire, England
Machen was the only child of a Welsh clergyman. He moved to London in 1880 and worked in a publishing house, in teaching and translating, including Casanova's Memoirs. His interest in the occult led him to join the Order of the Golden Dawn - a group involved in magic and thesophism - and influenced his best work, The Great God Pan, The Inmost Light, which was published in 1894. His only commercial success occurred in 1915 with the publication of the Angel of Mons. His autobiographical works Far Off Things and Things Near and Far have been highly acclaimed. Machen was also a regular contributor to the Evening News.
