Wilhelm Von Polenz

Died: Nov. 13, 1903 - Bartzen, Germany

Educated at the Gymnasium in Dresden, Polenz graduated in 1882. He then spent a year in the Dresden Guards, fulfilling his military obligation. He then studied law at the universities of Berlin,Wroclaw and Leipzig. Not interested in the law, Polenz made writing his profession and moved to Belin. In 1888, he married Beatrice Robin, an Englishwoman. In 1891, he acquired a manor in Lauba. The, in 1894, after the death of his father, he inherited the estate of Obercumwalde. Polenz's first novel, Atonement, appeared in 1890. His most famous work, The Farmer Buttner was published in 1895. In 1902, he visited America and wrote an essay the following year, entitled Land of the Future. Polenz, which was evident from his writing, was both a racist and an anti-semite. Nevertheless his writing was very popular and highly readable. His works include The Pastor of Breitendorf (1893), Karline (1894), Purity (1896), The Trench Hunter (1897), Forest (1899), Thekla Ludekind (1900), Junker und Frohner (1901) and Harvest Time: Posthumous Poems (1904).
