Ernest Gowers

a.k.a. Sir Ernest Arthur Gowers

Author Code: EEAG

Born: Jun. 2, 1880 - London, England

Died: Apr. 16, 1966 - Midhurst, Sussex, England

Educated at Cambridge University, Gowers graduated in 1902 with a First in the Classical Tripos. He then attended Wren's, studying for The Civil Service Examination. He enrolled for the Temple Bar exam and passed it in 1906. After having passed the Civil Service exam in 1903, he began a long and successful career starting with the Inland Revenue, the India Office, HM Treasury, NHS Commission and Conciliation and Arbitration Board. In 1919, he joined the Board of Trade as a director of production in the mines. In 1927, he became chairman of the Board of Inland Revenue. In 1938, he became chairman of the new Coal Commission. During World War II, he served as Senior Regional Commissioner for Civil Defense in London. Following the war he served on various committees. Today, Gowers is probably best remembered for his work on English usage, Plain Words (1948). In his final years he was commissioned by the Oxford University Press to undertake a revision of H. W. Fowler's Modern English Usage; a task which took him ten years to complete. Gowers became a CB in 1917, KBE in 1926, GBE in 1945 and GCB in 1953. His other works include ABC of Plain Words (1951), The Complete Plain Words (1954), A Life for a Life? The Problem of Capital Punishment (1956), H.W. Fowler: The Man and His Teaching (1957) and Medical Jargon:The Osier Oration (1958).
