Lucy H. Yates

a.k.a. Lucy Helen Yates

Author Code: ELHY

Born: (?) 1863 - Barford, Nottingham, England

Died: (?) 1935 - London, England

Yates was the daughter of a Nottingham lace maker and began writing at an early age. It is assumed that she worked for a time as a journalist. Around 1892 she began contributing articles and stories to Girl's Own Paper and other periodicals. She wrote on a variety of subjects, but she is best remembered for her cookbooks and housekeeping works. She later became a suffragist and delivered lectures at some of the Women's Freedom League's meetings. She moved to Chelsea with her sister and it is most likely that she passed away there. Her many works include The Profession of Cooking: From a French Point of View (1894), A Handbook of Fish Cookery (1897), House-Building (1895), Hints for Travellers in Summer (1897), In Praise of the Casserole (1904), The Gardener and the Cook (1913), The Years Ahead (1914), Catering By Contrivance (1926), Paying Guests (1926), Margaret Turns Pathfinder (1929) and The Country Housewife's Book (1934).
