Strindberg left the University of Uppsala in Sweden to become a free-lance writer. A firm disciple of Nietzsche, Strindberg was also interested in the occult and alchemy. He published a number of outstanding dramas which included The Father (1887), Miss Julie (1888), Creditors (1888) and There Are Crimes and Crimes (1897). His autobiography, The Son of a Servant, was published posthumously in 1913.
