Educated at Blundell's School in Tiverton and Exeter College, Oxford, Blackmore published some poetry and a number of novels, of which the best-known is Lorna Doone (1869). Some of his other works included Cradock Nowell (1866), Cripps the Carrier (1877) and Springhaven (1887).
