Satie studied briefly at the Paris Conservatoire before leaving to take a job as a cafe pianist. A recluse and eccentric, Satie returned to study at the age of 40, spending three years at the Schola Cantorum. Satie's music represented the first break with French Romanticism and had a great influence on many composers of the 20th century including Ravel and Debussy. His most popular works include the piano pieces Trois Sarabandes (1887), Trois Gymnopedies (1888), Trois Gnossienes (1890) and the five Nocturnes (1919). Satie also composed ballet and orchestral works such as Parade (1917), Socrate (1918) and Relache (1924).
