Educated to high school level, Stockton began his career as a graphic artist while beginning to publish some of his short stories. He joined the St. Nicholas Magazine as an editor and remained with them until 1881, when he was able to support himself by income derived from his writing. A prolific writer, Stockton produced numerous volumes of children's literature and fairy tales, novels, and a large number of short stories. One of the most popular writers of his time, Stockton is probably best-remembered for his short story, The Lady, or the Tiger? (1882). His other works include Rudder Grange (1879), The Casting Away of Mrs. Lecks and Mrs. Aleshine (1886), The Dusantes (1888), The Great War Syndicate (1889), Rudder Granges Abroad (1891), Pomona's Travels (1894) and The Great Staircase at Landover Hall (1900). |
